I always look for how I can help them, even if the ratio is off. If they have helped me a lot more than I could help them, the fact that I am trying to help them tends to motivate the volunteers and the people that are donating their time and money, because they at least know that I appreciate what they are doing and am not just trying to take advantage of it.

On the business side of it, you’ve got to find the right people that are passionate that are really working toward a goal, then you look at finding out what their internal self-development and personal goals are. When you are determining whether you are going to hire them, try to figure out “With the goals of my company - If they grow with my company, what kind of investment can I make in them and their personal goals?” and see if I can align the strategy of hiring them with enhancing their personal development as well.

Q. Do you have any particular recommended training resources, books, classes, anything like that which just comes to mind?

A. Unfair Advantage. That is an NLP book that I read and liked. Think and Grow Rich and Rich Dad Poor Dad have a good mind set. Anything by Dan Pink.

Q. How important is follow-up to a professional networker or attraction marketer?

A. It’s vital; most people don’t. Straight out of the gate, most people don’t ever follow-up. I went to a networking event a week and a half ago. I gave out a bunch of cards and no one followed up, but out of all the people I met – I met like seven people – and I have already followed-up. Most of them, I didn’t see any real connection there, but I followed-up with two of them.

Q. What are the most effective ways to follow-up that you have found?

A. My typical strategy that has worked for me is that I will go out and I will just invite them to coffee if I feel there was a connection and say, “Hey, I have no agenda; I just wanted to see if you have time to grab coffee.” Get to know the person a little deeper, ask them about their family, and find out where they are from. Find some common ground – “Do you like to golf? DO you like to ski? What do you want out of life?” I just email them or call them an invite them out to coffee and see where it goes.

Q. Is there anything in particular that you have found that doesn’t work very well for you for following up?

A. “Hi, I am Rob McNealy. Do you have a customer for me?” That doesn’t work.

Q. If I had about 15 to 30 minutes a day to devote to improving my networking and attraction marketing skills, what would you recommend I do with that time?

A. Not including going to events - Two minutes for phone calls, 20 minutes for online marketing, and 10 minutes to send emails to invite people to coffee.
